Men’s Divisions grand final preveiw

Mar 5, 2021 | Senior Touch

Perennial rivals will once again meet in the big dance with The Ori taking on Col Matthews Motors in the Men’s Division One grand final.

Col Matthews are searching for their fourth consecutive premiership, which if successful, will make it their seventh in nine seasons.

On the other hand, The Ori are looking to add to their 2016-17 triumph, which came at the expense of their Saturday opponents.

On paper there is talent aplenty with the majority of the players from both sides having played representative touch football for either Mudgee, NSW or Australia.

The Ori includes the likes of former Col Matthews Motors players Lachlan Hill and Toby Forrest, the Durrant brothers – Jake, Paddy and Tommy – past Player of the Final recipients Tim Condon and Ben Thompson, and Mudgee representatives Jared Robinson and Jeremy Doherty.

For the defending champions they are led by World Cup-winning players Justin Gossage and Roy Prasad, and they are joined by Paul Bryant, Kain Munro, Nakia Berridge, Jordi Robertson and Zane Wisbey who are backing up from the Junior State Cup Southern Conference last weekend.

In the two encounters this season, it has been The Ori who have outclassed Col Matthews Motors 8-5 and 7-3.

The Ori finished on top of the table and made the grand final following their 5-0 win over Burmac Financial Solutions. For Col Matthews Motors, they had to do it the hard way after they finished third on the ladder. Although they made it look easy with wins of 7-1 and 7-2 in the finals.

The Men’s Division One grand final will tap-off at 6.40pm.

Not to be outdone, the Men’s Division Two and Three grand finals are gearing up to be tight affairs.

These deciders will see the top two sides from the respective divisions on the ladder go head-to-head.

One Mob will meet Woolpack Hotel Mens in Division Two. It will be the third consecutive decider for One Mob who want to erase last season’s grand final defeat and hopefully add to their success in 2018-19.

They have been the leading team all season, finishing two wins clear of the chasing pack.

In the teams three previous meetings, One Mob have emerged victorious on all occasions – 7-6, 9-3 and 4-2.

But Woolpack Hotel Men won’t go down easily.

What Woolpack lack in youth, they certainly make up for with experience, and furthermore, they know how to spoil a party as they were the ones who ended the defending premiers – Stoddart’s Windows and Doors Men’s – season prematurely.

In the Men’s Division three, Dyno are hoping to remain undefeated this season with a victory against Tradies on Saturday.

Dyno broke through to win their maiden title 12 months ago and since then, they have not put a foot wrong.

Scoring 30 tries more than any other team, Dyno know how to sniff out the try-line.

Tradies have been the only team to get within a whisker of knocking off Dyno throughout the season.

Although their last encounter was an 8-2 victory to the defending champions, Tradies will be buoyant by their strong 7-2 win in the preliminary final.

The Men’s Division Two and Three grand finals will be played at 3.30pm on Saturday.
